Unbearable heat or sleet, Malayalis love their “chaaya and kadi(snacks)”. The fondest memories most malayalis have are of snacks that our mothers made or those we ate from local tea shops. Wherever you are ,if you are craving something sweet and homely here are 15 Malayali snacks to keep handy for appeasing your sweet tooth.

 

Sharkara varatti


Sharkara varatti is made of fried plantain coated in jaggery and mild spices. The name literally translates to sauteed jaggery. Although it is a favourite during onam, it is also enjoyable at other times as well.

 

Vattayappam

One of Kerala’s healthiest tea time snacks, vattayappam is made with rice flour, coconut and almost zero oil and is made by steaming. It is a popular dish from the Christian community here. Have it by itself or if you are adventurous savour it with a meat curry. 

 

Pazham Nirachathu

A full banana stuffed with caramalized coconut, cashew and raisins, battered and fried in fresh coconut oil, a single piece of this can satiate even the hungriest of people.

 

Unniyappam


A combination of rice flour, banana, jaggery and roasted coconut, unni appam is a blob of flavour and texture in every bite. It even has a special vessel to get the perfect shape.

Achappam


Crispy and sweet and specked with sesame seeds, Achappam is a favourite snack for most Malayalis and mothers who managed to make perfect Achappam at home were (and still are) considered to be superstars in every household. And when you have been a good child, you will find the special Achappams dusted with powerdered sugar stacked in old biscuit tins.

 

Aval Vilayichathu


One of the old school dishes that were made in bulk and stored for emergency hunger pangs, aval vilayachathu is a dish that can be had anytime of the day and is a great snack when there are many mouths to fed. Made with flattened rice, jaggery, coconut, nuts of your choice and roasted gram dal, this dish is an easy make as well. Have it 'simbly' or mix it with banana.

 

Avalosu Podi

Another snack that can be made in advance and stored, Avalosu podi or Poora Podi is a mixture o f rice flour, coconut, sugar etc. It makes for a tasty and filling snack or even breakfast when combined with ripe bananas. It is a special snack that is packed into every Malayali suitcase when you leave for boarding school or college.

 

Ada


Ada is considered an all in one kind of dish that can be consumed as a snack, or even as a meal in itself (usually as breakfast). Filled with shredded coconut, chopped coconut, jaggery, stuffed inside a rice flour dough, parcelled up in banana leaves and steamed, ada is a dish whose technique has not changed over countless years.

 

Sukhiyan


Made with mung bean mixed with jaggery and batter fried, sukhiyan was the way many mothers got their children to eat nutritious mung beans. It is a sweet and healthy filling coated with a thin rice flour batter on top.

 

Pazham Pori

 

The quickest snack to whip up, pazham pori or ethakkappam is essentially the snack that Kerala is known for.  Ripe plantain cut into slices and battered in rice flour, sugar, turmeric and cumin seeds (if needed) , pazham pori is the most enjoyed and popular in roadside eateries and homes alike. Every Malayali is bound to have a pazham pori memory.
 

Diamond Cuts

Quite similar to Madhura Seva, Diamond cuts is a fried snack coated in sugar syrup. The sugar forms a thin crust around the maida, giving it a crunch and it is slightly flavoured with cardamom for an extra kick.

 

Ellunda


A snack made from roasted sesame seeds and jaggery, ghee and water, ellunda is an easy snack which is also considered as an excellent health supplement by most grandmothers. It is perfect for when you crave something crunchy as well as sweet. Have an ellunda a day, keep the doctor away.

 

Vettu Cake


A harder version of the English tea cake, vettu cake is something which is still predominantly available in tea shops across the state. It tastes best when combined with frothed up tea from road side tea stalls. It is not too sweet and is a great substitute for packaged biscuits and cakes.

 

Kumbilappam


 Remember when jackfruits come into season and you are approached from all sides by items made from it including chips, payasam, curry, jam and of course ada. Kumbilappam is another name for ChakkaAda that is made by mixing jaggery and rice flour with jackfruit puree and steamed.
