The Kochi Biennale Foundation will host 'Gandhi and the Politics of the Image', the latest edition of Let’s Talk, Biennale seminar series, at BTH, in Ernakulam. Inviting everyone to come and listen to the eminent historian and author Vinay Lal who will be in conversation with the political psychologist and social theorist Ashis Nandy.

On the topic of discussion: Almost seven decades after his assassination, Mahatma Gandhi remains the most iconic figure of modern India. A distinct and complex iconography began to develop around him during his own lifetime. He was one of the most widely photographed men of his time; an entire industry of nationalist prints extolled his life; and statues of his abound throughout India and, increasingly, the rest of the world. Gandhi has been a blessing to cartoonists and a perennial subject for Indian artists. During this discussion, Lal will examine the life and work of Gandhi in the light of various forms of visual representation and suggest what kind of insights we might be able to derive from a study of these images.

Vinay Lal is Professor of History and Asian American Studies at UCLA, USA. He writes widely on Indian history, public and popular culture in India, colonialism, human rights, and the global politics of knowledge systems.

Ashis Nandy is one of contemporary India's most prominent thinkers. His publications include ‘The Intimate Enemy', 'Alternative Sciences', The Tao of Cricket', 'The Savage Freud', and 'Creating a Nationality'.

This Let's Talk event is hosted by the Kochi Biennale Foundation with the support of Backwaters Collective and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.
