VFC Yellow wins the Charity Amateur Football Tournament organized by Guardians Of Dreams Foundation.

The summer heat is rising and Kochi seems to be running a football fever. After all, we broke records at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium for the most spectators at a football game in the country. Well if the professionals are being cheered on so much, the amateurs are not far behind.  The finals of the Guardians Super Cup saw VFC Yellow and Atletico Madrid vie for the honor of raising the trophy and being champions. Don’t let the names mislead you, the teams were comprised of professionals and students including lawyers, doctors, chartered accountants  from all over Kochi. If the goalie was a doctor, the striker would be a dad of 2 and the defender a college student.  30 teams took part in the Guardians Super Cup which ended in a spirited final between VFC Yellow and Atletico Madrid.

Why Guardians Super Cup

1. Thirty amateur teams

2. Players were working professionals and students from various age groups

3. Proceeds to go to charity

4. Encourage sports and healthy living

Football in Kochi is a matter of pride and the players are equally passionate about the game and  take pride in their well-fought matches. The 7 on 7 tournaments seemed far from amateur as the teams lined up on the ground.  One team even remarked that they were clearly astounded by the passion at the ground and the fact that teams came geared in proper football kit. There were well-defended attacks and well-executed passes, which one would not expect from amateurs.  A header from the right wing that lead to a volley into the far post saw the VFC Yellow keep the lead in the first half and win the tournament. Aravind KG ( IT professional) and Sani Bose, (self-employed) were adjudged the top scorers in the tournament while Aditya Shenoy (lawyer) won the Best Goalie award.

The Guardians Super Cup is an annual charity event  where the community comes together to support underprivileged  children living in orphanages and shelter homes.  Conducted by the Guardians of Dreams, the tournament supports the needs of children while simultaneously celebrating the love for the game and promoting a healthy but fun lifestyle.
