Guess who's back with their brand new art and they don't mean art as in a new case of dissent or keeping the audience distanced from their work. Their work dubbed as the Indian Banksy appeared previously alongside the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the international exhibition of contemporary art held in Kochi. It had made its appearance once again during the current Biennale season. Their satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique.

The newly installed art has now been located in Trivandrum city, titled “Attention Please”. They have a visible sarcasm directed towards the playing of National Anthem before the movies are screened in theatres. The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the movie goers are required to stand up in attention when the Indian national anthem is played in cinema halls, reigniting a debate from both movie industry and the audience at the IIFK over whether an increasingly assertive brand of nationalistic pride is stifling civil liberties.

Take a look at them if you haven’t seen them already on your social media news feeds.

These graffiti seem to depict Hitchcock, Tarantino, Kurosawa, Iñárritu and Ang lee dressed in pure patriotic attires used by prominent Indian political figures. This again drives the onlooker’s attention towards the pillars of modern cinema standing in attention for the Indian national anthem.

We do not know as of yet if the artists are pro or against the idea of the national anthem being played before movie screenings.

When asked for a quote, the anonymous artist ‘Guess Who’ replied that

“There's no greater failure for an artist than explaining the meaning of her/his work. Everyone can interpret it the way they want it”.
