Kochi All Set to Rock With These Popular Bands

One of the biggest concerts this month, the Kochi Rocks event has a spectacular line up that celebrates rock, jazz, blues and more. Organized by JTPAC, the gig will take place at Le Meridien on Oct 14. While the football fans will be at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the Kerala Blasters match, expect the rest of Kochi on the other side of town. Meet the bands of the gig before you head out to the concert.

Indus Creed

Indus Creed are India’s frontrunning rock band. Originally formed in 1985 by Uday Benegal, Mahesh Tinaikar, Zubin Balaporia, Mark Selwyn, Jayesh Gandhi and Mark Menezes, the band downed its shutters in 1997. Unexpectedly regrouping in 2010, the band returned in modified form, featuring founding members Uday, Mahesh and Zubin. They are presently completed by Jai Row Kavi, Krishna Jhaveri and Gaurav Gupta.

The iconic rockers have been awarded numerous accolades (including Best Band at the Jack Daniel’s Rock Awards in 2012 and Vh1 India’s Hall of Fame award in 2014), toured like beasts and released four very successful albums. Their last album, EVOLVE, was mixed by the Grammy-nominated engineer Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Tears for Fears) and released by Universal Music India in 2012. Indus Creed are primed to release their newest work this year.

Junkyard Groove

Junkyard Groove was formed in the year 2005 and has become a mainstay in the Indian independent music scene. Founded by Chennai based singer-songwriter Ameeth Thomas, the band released its first studio album 11:11 in 2009. Their song ‘Its Ok’ became a part of playlists on every English radio station in India. The song 'Folk You' also won the AVIMA award for Feel Good Song of the Year (2010). 

They have opened for international bands like Iron Maiden, Incubus, Prodigy and Robert Plant to name a few. The band has also performed at various festivals including Rock n' India (2008), Nh7 Weekender (2010) and prestigious college festivals like Mood Indigo IIT Mumbai and Sarang IIT Chennai among others. The current line-up of Junkyard Groove features Ameeth Thomas on vocals and acoustic guitar, Joshua Mark Raj on guitars, Sajith Satya on bass and Shashank Vijay on drums.

Skrat

Skrat is an Indian Heavy Rock band from Chennai. The Current members include -the founding members T.T. Sriram on Vocals and Guitars, Tapass Naresh on Drums; and newly added Bass-man Jhanu. Following a few line-up changes and a hiatus or two, the core members of the band have managed to keep the music alive over several years. The band has released three self-produced albums and is in the process of recording its fourth. 

The extended crew of friends and technicians dubbed the ‘Skrat Crew’ have been an essential part of the bands accomplishments. The band is known for their highly energetic live shows and their DIY approach. This includes their tours, live videos and music videos not to mention the one of a kind road-movie of a band on bikes, touring, playing gigs along the way.

Pangea

Pangea (originally Orion J9 Foundation) is a progressive metal, soundtrack, drone outfit from Mumbai formed in 2007. It consists of Akshay Rajpurohit (guitars, synth) of Scribe , Shadaab Kadri (guitars, synth) & Kuber Sharma (guitars, production) of Black Hole Theory. The group released their debut album Snails Are When I Was Young in 2011.  According to their FB page, they only create sit-on-your-couch-and-blaze music.

Girish and the Chronicles

Girish and The Chronicles is a Hard Rock band founded by the Lead Vocalist / Guitarist / Songwriter - Girish Pradhan, in 2009. Their first single, "Angel", went into the Great Eastern Rock compilation Vol. II, and was their first known original composition. They wrote “Golden Crown”  for the Sikkim Football Association. In mid-2010, their single "Yesteryears" was nominated and awarded a Silver Trophy, at the “Suncane Skale Festival, Montenegro, Europe.

Along with a year long stint in Hong Kong and South Korea, the band has played at many venues including the Mighty Rock Union hosted by Grooveshack, and also done several charity shows to help rebuild Nepal. Girish And the Chronicles are, Girish Pradhan - Lead Vocals / Guitars, Suraz Sun - Lead Guitars / Backing Vocals, Yogesh Pradhan- Bass Guitar / Guitar / Keyboards / Vocals, Nagen Mongrati - Drums / Percussion / Backing Vocals and Annutri Kaushik - Keyboards
