I could sum up my conversation with Shaun Romy in a single sentance :'' You can take Shaun out of Kochi, but you can't take Kochi out of Shaun"

A movie about an old Kochi village that housed  daily wage earners, protagonists who look less than glamorous and a frequently idolized young star portraying a man in his forties, Kammattipaadam was yet another movie from Rajeev Ravi filled with surprises. This movie also marks the debut of the dusky biotechnology engineer Shaun Romy who shed her glamorous avatar to portray Anita-the daily wage earning, under-appreciated female lead of the movie.

What did it feel like going from being a model to making your debut as such a non-glamorous character?

For me, modelling was a hobby along with my full time job, so when I went to the audition I just really wanted the part as it was a Rajeev Ravi movie. I didn’t think twice about it. When they explained the entire character to me, I felt happy to do the part because they wanted someone with dark skin tone and I didn’t have to hide my real skin tone for a character. I was a little scared at first about the clothes and the no makeup look, but as the shooting continued I realized that those are not really the things that matter.

What was the biggest challenge while portraying “Anitha” on screen?

I felt the Kochi slang and the language were the hardest hurdles for me. I was in Bangalore for 16 years and I have only settled back in Kochi for the last 3 years and I hadn’t quite picked up the way of conversing.

Having lived here for the last three years and doing a movie based in the city, what are your feelings about Kochi?

As if by coincidence, one of the first things I did when I moved to the city three years was watch Annayum Resulum by Rajeev Ravi. I saw a lot of beauty in that movie, through the stories, the locations and the music and all that made me love the city. After doing Kammattipaadam I feel quite sad as well because the place Kammattipaadam is not what it used to be anymore.  It is not by any means something that happens only here but in case of most rural places.

Which are your favourite Malayalam movies?

Sfadikam and a lot of Mohanlal movies, Annayum Resulum  and now Kammattipaadam!

Did you have previous acting experience?

Not really, in Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi,  I played the role of the heroine’s friend but that was just a small role without lines.

Are you going to focus on acting now?

I think so, because I have come to love the experience of acting. But I do not have any fixed plans as of now.

If you could play any Malayalam character from the movies, which would it be?

I know it is ambitious but I think some of the roles that Urvashi has done would be my first pick. I feel that she has come across as effortless in most of her characters and her character choices are all that I have admired.
