When The Schools Reopened: Some Major Missing We Felt

The first day of school is always worth capturing for many reasons

June is a month that symbolises many things to a Kochite. It’s a bit of bittersweet time, especially for students and teachers. While the rest of Kochi was enjoying the bliss of the first few monsoon showers, the reopened schools on June first saw a rush of emotions and excitement for the school going crowd!

The same was the case with Al Ameen Public School. When the gates opened on June 1st, students poured in, mostly reluctantly, leaving the carefree days of summer vacation behind. The yellow school buses filled our streets in the mornings again and we all probably had a late day at work on June 1st as well.

Wearing brand new, fresh, straight out of the laundry uniforms, packing their bags, and heading to school must’ve felt so foreign to them. The only good thing about June 1st mornings for me back when I was a kid was that I didn’t have to wear shoes. Since it was the monsoon season, sandal shoes were allowed, so the hassle with putting on socks and polishing up shoes was not there.

Reopening days also meant something else, it meant meeting up with friends, a few that you couldn’t see at all during the summer vacations. It’s a sweet reunion of sorts, before the class officially starts.

We all used to have that one big assembly on the first day back. I remember walking in a line, feeling like we were being led to slaughter, but secretly being excited because I was back with my friends, at a place where we would make memories never to be forgotten.
