Even after 65 years of independence, education has been just a matter of luck for most of the children in India.  Illiteracy is a self-fulfilling curse that perpetuates the chain of poverty, degradation and child labour in our country. Since the year 1996,  Cochin Back Water Round Table 131 has tried to reach out to underprivileged children by adopting projects that aimed at providing quality school infrastructure. In 1998 the project was formally undertaken as the National Project of Round Table India “Freedom Through Education” – in pursuit of educating underprivileged children (FTE). In support of this initiative, Cochin Round Table 131 is organizing a charity event at JTPAC, which will have theater stalwart Rajit Kapur and more from Rage Productions, staging the compilation of plays One on One 2. Rage Production’s part in this effort brings their international acceptance and the talent of national artists to Kochi. All proceeds of the event will be used for the Freedom Through Education campaign.

RTI’s wing in Cochin
Cochin Back Water Round Table 131 is the Cochin wing of Round Table India which has members who are doctors, architects, lawyers, businessmen etc. The Cochin backwater round table 131 was formed 20 years ago and is instrumental in providing various service activities to the community. They have been keen in supporting infrastructure development for various schools like the Chittoor LP School, Theresa Spinelli School, Raksha Special School, Little Flower High School, Edapally UP School, Girideepthi Tribal School and many other schools.

Freedom Through Education

Round Table India’s (RTI) focus on Infrastructure-Building is aimed at promoting Education for Posterity and hence RTI has put in colossal efforts to build FTE School Blocks across the nation. As part of this initiative, the members of the FTE program identify schools that are functioning with dilapidated or open structures and are mainly for underprivileged people. These schools will need better infrastructure in order to create a better atmosphere for learning. It is here that RTI steps in and builds schools with proper amenities to help the poor and needy in our country.

For the past two decades, Cochin Back Water Round Table 131 has served the community through its efforts and dedicated fellowship of young men. The lifeline of 131 has been the service it offered the community and the team is now focussing on community development. Since RTI undertook the concept of National Project in 1992, it has never looked back. From each strength to strength, Cochin Back Water Round Table 131 has grown into an explicit organization today focusing on the freedom of individuals by nurturing the fruits of education in their lives.
