The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a contemporary take on the 1920 film and emerÌ€ged out of spatial experimentation with a focus on objects, some found and others made. It is a multi media performance in which the scenography and dramaturgy emerged together in an attempt to navigate through the run down warehouse space where the production has been staged. The story of Holstenwall unfolds through multiple layers of visual narratives slowly peeling off, to keep the audiences at the edges of their seats. It tends towards an immersive experience for the spectators, and engages them through a visual language that is trying to break of out of chronological narrative, and place the spectator in a position to weave together the plot through a broken audio-visual narrative. The play begins with Francis recounting his events that completely ruined his and his fiancé, Jane’s life. A murderer is afoot in the imaginary town of Holstenwall and nobody knows his/her identity. After the Town Clerk’s murder, when Francis’s friend Alan is found murdered under mysterious circumstances in the dead of the night after a day out in the local town fair, Francis is convinced that the travelling duo of the mountebank Caligari and his ever sleeping companion, Cesare are behind the crime spree. However, nobody including the Police is convinced by his story. While Francis enlists the help of Jane’s father, Dr. Stern to help him investigate into the matter, Cesare abducts Jane from her home. After a brief chase, Jane is rescued and she reveals her abductor to be Cesare. Francis, now vindicated wreaks havoc in anger, finally to reveal a side of him that was unknown to even him.
